How is Biblical Counseling different from traditional therapy?
Biblical Counseling is a non-clinical ministry counseling focused on spiritual growth and the application of Scripture to life’s challenges. While my clinical therapy is "integrative" (bringing faith into the clinical hour), my Biblical Counseling sessions are purely discipleship-focused and do not involve a medical diagnosis or clinical treatment plan.
Why can’t I use my insurance for Biblical Counseling?
Because Biblical Counseling is a spiritual service rather than a medical treatment for a diagnosed mental disorder, it is not eligible for insurance reimbursement or superbills.
Why can’t I participate in Biblical Counseling if I have a mental health diagnosis?
While spiritual values are a vital part of the healing journey for many, there are important distinctions to make regarding insurance and professional ethics when a formal mental health diagnosis is involved:
Clinical vs. Spiritual Scope: Licensed mental health treatment is governed by state boards and focuses on evidence-based clinical interventions to manage symptoms of a diagnosis. Biblical counseling is a spiritual discipline focused on theological growth. When a diagnosis is present, ethics require that we prioritize a "standard of care" that ensures your clinical safety and stability.
Insurance Limitations: Insurance providers generally only reimburse for services they deem "medically necessary" to treat a diagnosed mental health condition. Because biblical counseling is categorized as spiritual guidance rather than medical treatment, most insurance plans will not cover these sessions.
Our Approach: To provide the highest quality of care and maintain ethical integrity, we clearly distinguish between clinical psychological services and spiritual support. If you are seeking treatment for a diagnosed condition, we will focus on clinical protocols. We can still, however, integrate your faith into the clinical process as part of your personal value system, or we can discuss a private-pay model if you prefer a strictly non-clinical, spiritual approach. Feel free to schedule a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your specific needs.
